Our Special Book Club Event: Jen Hatmaker's "Awake" + Hard Back Copy Included

I’m *very* excited to invite you to our our first ever Flourish Market Book Club event on Sunday, November 16th from 2–4pm.

We’ll be diving into Jen Hatmaker’s new book, Awake, which releases at the end of September. It’s going to be a special afternoon of creating space for real conversation, anchored in hope, optimism, and agency.

I’ll lead a group discussion, facilitate smaller breakout conversations, and share parts of my personal story.

To wet your appetite, here is a snippet from Jen talking about the book: 

“At 2:30am on July 11th, 2020, out of a dead sleep, I hear five whispered words not meant for me.
‘I just can’t quit you.’

My husband of 26 years is voice texting his girlfriend next to me in our bed.

It is the end of my life as I know it.

Awake is kind of a story within larger stories.

So it is a memoir and it is about the loss of my 26 year marriage and everything that I had built around that story, and then the recovery and the reinvention process, but larger, it’s also the story of religious trauma.

It is a story of patriarchy. It is the story of body shame and disassociation. It’s the story of gender limitations.

And so while it is my story, it is one that is fairly universal to women here in the middle of life.

And so it’s not just a sad story about divorce. It’s actually a really hopeful story about reinvention and recovery and building a pretty incredible second half of life.”

As a lonnnnngggggggg time follower of Jen’s (15+ years), it is so special to see Jen’s message resonating with so many and big news outlets picking up her book - after she has gotten raked (raked!) over the coals for 9 years after becoming a public ally to the LGBTQ+ community in 2016.

The New York Times, The Daily, Time, and more have all done interviews with her in the last few weeks, and it’s exciting to know this book is going to get into the hands of so many women!
